Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges Park

Parks & Wildlife · Arenal & La Fortuna · Nature tours

Mistico is a family-owned private reserve of mature rainforest on the Lake Arenal road, 25–30 minutes west of La Fortuna, and the busiest hanging-bridges park around Arenal. A 3.2 km paved loop crosses 16 bridges: six are long suspension bridges, the tallest about 45 m (150 ft) above the forest floor and the longest 97 m, plus a short detour to a waterfall. On clear days you see Arenal Volcano from the first big bridge and from the lookout by the parking lot. Plan 1.5–2 hours on your own or about 2.5 with a naturalist guide; there are also 6 am birding, 4:30 pm twilight and 6 pm night walks. Non-slip concrete, railings and a 1.5 km accessible route make it one of the easiest rainforest walks in Costa Rica for kids, seniors and wheelchair users. The catch: from mid-morning tour groups fill the one-way trail, lines form at the bridges and animals hide, so book a 6:00–7:00 slot.

Open daily year-round; walks pause in storms or lightning and are rescheduled, and single bridges occasionally close for maintenance (a detour is used)

Highlights

  • Six suspension bridges strung across a forested ravine: Tolomuco, the longest, runs 97 m, and Vista Arenal and La Catarata hang about 45 m above the ground.
  • Arenal Volcano views on clear days from the middle of the Vista Arenal bridge and from the framed photo spot at the lookout by the entrance.
  • A short side trail to a small waterfall, a hummingbird garden with little pools, a tunnel and ten smaller fixed bridges along the loop.
  • Lowland and highland forest meet here: 300+ bird species recorded, raptor migration over the canopy from November to February, and regular sightings of coatis, peccaries, toucans, motmots, monkeys and poison dart frogs.
  • Specialty walks: 6 am birding with a spotting scope, a 4:30 pm twilight tour as the forest switches from day to night, and a 6 pm night walk for red-eyed tree frogs and kinkajous.
  • Built for everyone: non-slip paved paths with railings, a gentle 1.5 km accessible route, strollers on site and electric scooters for rent.

Tips

  • Grab the 6:00 or 6:30 slot. People who start at opening describe empty bridges and mist in the canopy; by about 8–9 am the tour vans roll in and lines form.
  • Going without a guide? Walk slowly and watch where guided groups point their scopes; that's usually where the sloth, snake or frog is.
  • Clouds often hide Arenal: check the lookout at the entrance before and after the walk, and pause in the middle of the Vista Arenal bridge.
  • Early mornings can feel cool and the concrete gets slick in rain: bring a light rain jacket, shoes with grip and a cover for your phone or camera.
  • With small or restless kids, go self-guided (families often finish the loop in 60–90 minutes) and spend the guide money on a night tour; the waterfall spur has steps, so leave the stroller at the junction.
  • With a guide, ask for photos through the spotting scope with your phone; guides here do it all the time. On late slots start by 2 pm, as it gets dark early under the canopy.

Good to know

  • Entry is by time slot every 30 minutes from 6:00 am to 3:50 pm (last entry). Book and prepay online: early slots sell out in high season (Dec 16–Apr 15 and Jul 15–Aug 30).
  • Self-guided entry is $32 + 13% tax for morning slots and $28 in the afternoon; teens 11–18 and kids 5–10 pay less, under-5s are free, and Costa Rica residents get local rates with ID at check-in. Code SAVEINADVANCE takes 10% off if you book 15+ days ahead.
  • Closed-toe shoes are mandatory (no sandals). No food on the trail, no pets, no drones, no speakers, and no more than 15 people per bridge; no running, jumping or rocking it.
  • Since August 2025 single-use plastic is banned on the trail: bring a refillable bottle (there's a water station). Tour operators say bulky bags go into $1 lockers, so carry only essentials.
  • Mistico has no restaurant of its own; La Roca Bistró, a café-restaurant with a volcano view, sits by the parking lot. Packed food can be eaten only around reception.
  • Cancel or change at least 48 hours ahead for a full refund; later cancellations, no-shows and turning back over fear of heights aren't refunded. Tours stopped by storms or lightning are rescheduled.

What travelers love

  • Guides with spotting scopes who find snakes, frogs, bats and sloths you'd walk right past.
  • Walking level with the treetops on bridges that sway a little but feel solid, especially in morning mist.
  • Big views of Arenal Volcano when the sky is clear.
  • An easy paved loop that works for kids, grandparents and strollers.

What some travelers don't like

  • Crowds and noisy groups from mid-morning, with lines to get onto the bridges.
  • Less wildlife than hoped, especially in the afternoon or in heavy rain.
  • Pricey for a walk; some find it commercial and too paved to feel wild.
  • Full meals at the café by the entrance are expensive for what you get.

Questions travelers ask

Do I need to book Mistico Hanging Bridges in advance?

Yes, it's best to. Entry is by timed slot, the park asks for prepaid online reservations, and the early slots go first in high season. In quiet months some visitors still buy at the gate, but don't count on it.

Is a guide worth it at Mistico?

If wildlife is the goal, yes: guides carry spotting scopes and find snakes, frogs and bats most people miss. If you mainly want the bridges and views, the self-guided loop is well signed and cheaper ($32 vs. $44 + tax).

How long does the Mistico hanging bridges walk take?

About 1.5–2 hours on your own and about 2.5 hours with a guide on the 3.2 km loop. If you're short on time, a 1.5 km route is available.

Are the bridges scary if I'm afraid of heights?

The bridges have mesh sides about 4 ft (1.2 m) high and sway only a little; most nervous visitors manage by crossing at a steady pace without stopping in the middle. The park doesn't refund if you turn back.

Can you see Arenal Volcano from the hanging bridges?

Yes, on clear days: best from the Vista Arenal bridge and from the lookout at the entrance. Clouds often cover the summit, more so in the afternoon and in rainy season.

Mistico or Sky Adventures: which hanging bridges are better?

Mistico is the easier, fully paved option with six suspension bridges and no zip lines; Sky Adventures has a more rustic dirt trail and lets you add zip lining or a tram. If you don't plan to zip line, Costa Rica travel blogs usually point you to Mistico.

How do I get to Mistico without a car?

The park runs a round-trip shuttle from La Fortuna hotels for $25 + tax per person (minimum 2); a taxi is about $30 each way. There's no direct bus.

Is Mistico stroller- and wheelchair-friendly?

Yes. The paved loop works with strollers (available on site) except for the stepped waterfall spur, and a 1.5 km accessible route with gentle slopes has electric scooters for rent.
