Catarata El Encanto (El Barón, Esparza)

Waterfall · Jacó & Herradura · hidden gem

A wide curtain of water pouring about 23 m (75 ft) over a sheer rock wall on the Río Paires, in the dry countryside between Esparza and San Mateo — it looks a lot like a smaller Llanos de Cortés. Below is a huge natural pool (~45 m across, up to 8 m deep) where local families float on tubes and picnic all day.

usually closed around March–May when the falls dry up, and on stormy days in the rainy season

Tip

Timing is everything: Nov to mid-January brings good flow and clear water; from late January the falls thin out; around March–May access is usually closed (no water); in the rainy months it can be muddy or closed after storms — message the owners on WhatsApp or check their Facebook first. Weekdays are nearly empty; Sundays bring big crowds. Ask at the parking for the mango ceviche.

Be careful

185 concrete steps (with railings) and a scramble over big boulders to reach the falls — wear sneakers or strap sandals. The river is swift after rain: swim only when the water is calm and check the depth before jumping off rocks.

Getting there

From Route 131 (Esparza–San Mateo) take the turn for El Barón and head west; keep left at Soda La Cueva/Danna, at the next fork go right past the soccer field and church, then ~5 min to Restaurante/Quinta El Encanto on the right (pay and park there). The last stretch is dusty gravel, fine for a sedan. 350 m walk: a rocky track, then the stairs down (a lookout halfway).
