Cerro Caballito

Viewpoint · Nicoya Peninsula · hidden gem

A family-run hill near the village of Caballito, between the Tempisque Bridge and Nicoya. A well-marked 2.5 km trail climbs through open pasture and dry forest (with benches along the way) to a main lookout with a swing and the small 'caballito' rock, then two higher viewpoints – the 360° summit, where you can camp, looks over most of Guanacaste to the ocean. Famous for sunrise; sunsets are just as good.

Tip

Message the owners on WhatsApp before you go. For sunrise the hike starts around 3:15 a.m.; for sunset start around 2:15 p.m. The climb takes about 40 minutes and is harder than it looks – bring a headlamp for the way down. There are showers at the owners' house afterwards.

Be careful

Steep climb in strong heat – carry plenty of water, and use a headlamp if you start or finish in the dark. Rain blows in from the sea quickly; head down early if a storm approaches.

Getting there

The trail starts at the owners' farmhouse near Caballito (Nicoya canton), off Route 18 between the Tempisque Bridge and Nicoya; any car gets there and there is parking. The map point is the summit lookout.
