Cañas Mosaic Church (Parroquia Patriarca San José)

Landmark · Guanacaste · hidden gem

Cañas' parish church on the central park is covered top to bottom – including its nearly 30 m bell tower – in bright tile mosaics designed by Cañas-born painter Otto Apuy: winding vines, starbursts, religious and jungle scenes made from whole and broken tiles. Worth a short break on the drive along Route 1; across the park, two sodas still pour leche dormida, the town's secret-recipe milk drink.

Tip

The outside alone is worth the stop; the inside is often open only for a short window in the afternoon. Grab a leche dormida at Soda Don Rogelio or Soda El Parque by the park.

Be careful

It's an active parish – dress respectfully and keep quiet during Mass.
