Laguna Congo (Bosque Alegre crater lakes)

Nature spot · San José & Central Valley · hidden gem

The quiet sister of Laguna Hule: a big, deep-green crater lake ringed by forest inside the Bosque Alegre wildlife refuge, reached only on foot. The rocky, often muddy track starts at the Bosque Alegre lookout, runs past Laguna Hule, crosses a river and then branches right for about 3 km through the woods. Howler monkeys and birds are common along the way, and there's rarely anyone at the water.

Tip

Pack a real picnic and a swimsuit: there are no services at the lagoon, and the water is cool but pleasant. Leave early, since afternoon rain turns the trail into a mud bath.

Be careful

Don't cross the river if it's running high after rain, and go with company: there's no cell coverage guarantee and no one around to help. Wear shoes with grip for the loose stones and mud.

Getting there

Drive via Vara Blanca, Cinchona and Cariblanco toward Los Ángeles, then about 6.5 km of gravel to the Alojamiento y Mirador Bosque Alegre (above Laguna Hule), where you can park and use the restrooms. From there it's roughly 4 km each way; about 8 km round trip.
