Mirador de Orosi
Viewpoint · San José & Central Valley

Mirador de Orosi is a free public park run by Costa Rica's tourism board (ICT), perched on the rim of the Orosi valley 3 km south of Paraíso. From its lawns and railings you look straight down on Orosi town, the winding Río Grande de Orosi, coffee farms and the upper end of Lake Cachí, with forested mountains closing in on every side. Most people stay 15–20 minutes for photos, but locals make a morning of it: there are covered picnic shelters with grills, a playground, restrooms and drinking fountains, all refreshed in a 2026 renovation. It's an easy, budget-friendly stop for families, couples and anyone driving the Orosi loop, and it pairs naturally with the Ujarrás lookout and ruins a few minutes away. The honest catch: it's only open 8 a.m. to about 4 p.m., so there's no sunset here, and the view is at its best early — later in the day haze or cloud can flatten it.

Highlights
- A bird's-eye view down the whole Orosi valley: Orosi town, the S-bends of the Río Grande de Orosi, coffee farms and the head of Lake Cachí
- Free, ICT-run park with big lawns, pine trees, covered picnic shelters with grills, a playground, restrooms and drinking fountains
- Freshly renovated in 2026: larger shelters, ramps for wheelchairs and strollers, new restrooms, paths and play area
- Birds of prey often circle over the valley — good for birders and photographers
- An easy stop on the Orosi loop: the Ujarrás lookout and ruins, Orosi's colonial church and the hot springs are all a short drive away
Tip
Come in the morning — the valley is usually clearest and the gates close around 4 p.m. Pack a picnic and your own charcoal if you want to use the grills; alcohol isn't allowed.
Be careful
If it is on a roadside, park fully off the road and watch for traffic.
Getting there
On Route 224, 3 km south of the Paraíso church toward Orosi — about 9 km (15–20 min) from Cartago and 35 km from San José. Paved road and free parking inside; Orosi-bound buses from Cartago pass the entrance.
Tips
- Go early: locals say morning light is best and there are fewer people before the weekend barbecue crowd arrives.
- If you plan to grill, pack charcoal and a fire starter along with your picnic.
- Bring binoculars or a zoom lens — raptors ride the thermals over the valley.
- Pair it with the Mirador de Ujarrás and the Ujarrás ruins (both free, about 10 minutes apart) for a half-day of views and history.
- Then drive 5 km down into Orosi for the 1743 colonial church and lunch in town.
Good to know
- Entry is free for everyone — the park belongs to the ICT. Recent ICT notices (Dec 2023, Mar 2026) give hours of 8 a.m.–4 p.m. daily, holidays included; some older listings still say 4:30 p.m.
- It closes well before sunset, so plan it as a morning or midday stop.
- Bring your own food and drinks; alcohol isn't allowed. The shelters have grills, but you'll need your own charcoal and fire starter.
- Parking is inside the park, with security booths at the site.
- Paths and shelters have ramps (Costa Rica's Law 7600), and the 2026 works added more access for wheelchairs, older visitors and strollers.
What travelers love
- The view — many call it one of the best lookouts they've visited, with the whole valley spread out below
- Roomy, well-kept lawns for strolling, reading or just sitting quietly; some come here to meditate
- A great free family day: picnic tables, grills and a playground
- Watching birds circle over the valley
What some travelers don't like
- Weekends and holidays fill up with family barbecues — regulars suggest going early
- The view depends on the weather: later in the day haze or cloud can wash it out, especially in the rainy season
Questions travelers ask
Is Mirador de Orosi free?
Yes. It's run by the Costa Rican Tourism Board (ICT) and there's no entrance fee for locals or foreigners.
What are the opening hours?
The ICT's latest notices give 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day, including holidays. Some older guides list 4:30 p.m., so don't count on staying late.
Can you barbecue or bring food?
Yes — there are covered shelters with grills and picnic tables. Bring your own food, charcoal and fire starter; alcohol isn't allowed.
How do I get there without a car?
Take an Orosi-bound bus from Cartago; it passes through Paraíso and down Route 224 past the entrance, 3 km south of the Paraíso church. Ask the driver to let you off at the Mirador.
How far is it from San José and Cartago?
About 35 km from San José — plan on roughly an hour to an hour and 20 minutes with traffic — and about 9 km (15–20 minutes) from central Cartago.
Do I need a 4x4?
No. It sits on paved Route 224 between Paraíso and Orosi, and any car can get in.
Is it wheelchair accessible?
Largely, yes: the park follows Costa Rica's accessibility law (Law 7600), and the 2026 renovation added ramps to the picnic shelters and improved the concrete paths.
Orosi or Ujarrás lookout — which one?
Orosi looks south down the river valley to Orosi town; Ujarrás looks east over Lake Cachí and the Ujarrás ruins. Both are free ICT parks about 10 minutes apart, so most people do both.
