Orotina's tree-shaded main plaza, with an old octagonal kiosk, monuments to the Cuban patriot José Martí and to the Indigenous king Garabito, and the town church on one side. A real Costa Rican town square, nothing like the beach strip; birders have even photographed owls in its trees.

Stop in the late afternoon when locals gather; the municipal market is next to the park, a good place to try Orotina's famous fruit.
