Peñón de Guacalillo
Viewpoint · Jacó & Herradura · hidden gem
A 12-meter (40 ft) cliff of old volcanic rock rising straight out of the dark sand of Playa Guacalillo, north of Tárcoles. You can walk along the top for wide views of the Gulf of Nicoya, and at higher tides the surf slams right into its base.

Tip
Come for sunset, but get there early on weekends — it is a local favorite. At mid tide a rocky path on the inland side takes you down to the sand without getting wet; at low tide you can walk under the cliff. With a high-clearance car you can continue north along Playa Bajamar to the sea caves at Punta del Pacífico (low tide only).
Be careful
No railings at the cliff edge and a big drop — keep kids close. Crocodiles live in the lagoons behind these beaches. It is windy with no shade: bring a hat with a strap and plenty of water.
Getting there
From Route 34 turn toward the ocean at Lagunillas (landmark: Super y Licorera El Sol Naciente). Paved to the Cuarros school, then a decent dirt road a sedan can handle; keep left at the signs near the beach and take the short steep road up to the cliff top. In heavy rain, without 4x4, park on the road below.
