Punta Mala (Playa Hermosa–Punta Mala Wildlife Refuge)

Nature spot · Jacó & Herradura · hidden gem

The western tip of a state wildlife refuge: a wild gray-sand beach under forested headlands, strewn with driftwood, where olive ridley turtles come ashore to nest. Very few visitors, a lot of surf and sky.

Tip

Go early and walk the beach quietly. Turtle nesting mostly falls in the rainy months; if you see tracks or a marked nest, keep your distance and use no lights or flash.

Be careful

Heavy surf and strong currents make swimming risky. Don't touch turtles, eggs or nests, and bring water and sun protection: there is no shade or shop on the beach.

Getting there

Part of a protected area: no camping, fires or fishing are allowed inside the refuge. Follow any ranger signs and check access with SINAC.
