Tárcoles Crocodile Bridge

Nature spot · Jacó & Herradura

The Route 34 bridge over the Río Tárcoles is a free front-row seat to one of the biggest American crocodile hangouts in the country: dozens of crocs, some 4 m long, sunning on the sandbanks below. Scarlet macaws from Carara often fly over too.

Tip

Walk the pedestrian sidewalk on the bridge and bring binoculars or a zoom lens. Low tide uncovers more sandbanks, so you'll see more crocs.

Be careful

Never climb down to the riverbank or throw food: feeding crocodiles is illegal and dangerous. Park in the watched lots by the bridge and keep valuables out of sight in the car.
